What is a king and what is he due? His position demands respect, service, obedience, and loyalty from his people. The Lord told his people that if they wanted an earthly king (something He did not want for them, see 1 Samuel 8) then they would have to agree to these terms and submit to his authority. They agreed and the Lord gave them what they wanted – an earthly king.
When this psalm was originally written the readers thought of King David, we find from reading Hebrews (see Hebrews 1) that it is ultimately speaking about JESUS, the one true and everlasting King. Daily we need to bow down and submit to him as King. We need to serve him, obey him, and carry out HIS will. While that all seems unfair and an oppressive life; take a look at the last words of the psalm.
“Blessed are all who take refuge in him”
Psalms 2:12
This tells me two things.
- When we submit to His authority we will be blessed
- We are under his protective wing.
The dictionary defines refuge as a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble. Wow, what a trade-off, we give our loyalty, talents, gifts, and service to Jesus and in return, we are safe, sheltered, free from danger & trouble. Iโll take that any day!
