Seasons of Pruning

Apart from Jesus, we are nothing!

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

John 15:4-5
Apart from Him, we cannot bear fruit.

Life comes from him. Yet, it won’t be easy. In John 15, Jesus says that if we are a branch that bears no fruit then we will be tossed away and burned by fire. Then he goes on to say that if we abide in him and bear fruit then we will be pruned so that we can bear more. To be pruned is to be trimmed, or to be cut back. This process of pruning increases growth and fruitfulness. However, it can also be painful.

As we continue to grow and bear fruit, God will cut away our dead or overgrown branches in order to keep us healthy and thriving. How has God been pruning you lately?

Perhaps your business was growing steadily and you were happy, but then all of a sudden things seemed to halt. Maybe this is God trying to prune you.

Perhaps after 10 years of a pretty good marriage, you’ve hit a rocky patch and are questioning what you should do. Maybe this is God trying to prune you.

Pruning often comes when we least expect it and it is often uncomfortable, but we need to seek God in those moments for wisdom, encouragement, and peace. Do not let seasons of pruning make you question God’s goodness or draw you away from God’s love. Instead, try to remember that he sees the whole picture and knows when you need to cut back a little in order to grow more. Remember that He is good.
