Psalm 86 is a prayer written by David asking God to hear his prayers and also giving God praise. It’s a prayer that would be fitting for us to pray when we’re in need of God’s grace and favor.
He Hears
“Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy…
In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me.”
Psalm 86:1,7
God hears us when we call. He may not answer in the way we expect, and we may not hear him at all, but he’s there and he hears. He is trustworthy and you can call out to him when you’re in trouble.
Don’t be afraid of him, and don’t be embarrassed or ashamed of your struggles. He sees you and he knows you, so nothing you say will surprise him.
Praising Him
“There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.”
Psalm 86:8-10
It’s important that our prayers are not all one-sided — us asking God for things. Relationships and communication are two-sided and the same applies to our relationship with God. It can’t all be about him giving to us, we need to give him the praise he deserves.
“I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.”
Psalm 86:12-13
We praise you today Oh Lord… We offer up our gifts of thanksgiving… We come to you looking for wisdom… These things we pray in your name! AMEN.
