Psalm 48 is a song of praise that provides the imagery of God as our fortress, and not just any fortress. This fortress is so impressive that it scares away our enemies who gather together and seek to attack us. One good look at God’s impenetrable protection, and our enemies take off running.
“Within her citadels God has made himself known as a fortress. For behold, the kings assembled; they came on together. As soon as they saw it, they were astounded; they were in panic; they took to flight.”Psalm 48:3-5
What exactly is a fortress? It’s usually large, and it’s permanent. It’s a place of security. It’s a place where we’re protected from those on the outside.
God is our fortress.
He will never leave us, and in him we have no reason to fear because we are forever protected.
Worthy of Praise
The other half of Psalm 48 speaks of characteristics of God and his undeniable worthiness of our wholehearted praise.
“As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God, which God will establish forever.”Psalm 48:8
Verse 8 is encouraging and serves as a reminder that God is a God of his word. If he makes a promise then we can rest assured he will follow through. He will never disappoint us.
“As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with righteousness.”Psalm 48:10
Verse 10 reminds us that God’s name and praise is spilling across the whole earth. Nothing can stop it. God’s name and who he is is so great that his reputation and praise reaches to the ends of the earth.
How amazing is it that he’s our God and we are his beloved children?! That the God of all creation is also our fortress where we can seek refuge?!
