Money Isn’t Everything – Psalm 49

Psalm 49

Psalm 49 is sermon about how money isn’t everything. Both the rich and the poor die, and none of use get to take our riches with us.

We can top the list of the world’s richest people and still be unsatisfied. We can have all the money in the world, yet we cannot save ourselves or our friends from death. Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, was worth over $20 billion when he passed away from cancer. If anyone’s wealth could have saved them from death it would have been him, but it couldn’t.

“Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, that he should live on forever and never see the pit.”

Psalm 49:7-9

The purpose of this Psalm is not to make us feel helpless. It is meant to remind us that our hope does not lie in the number our bank account balance reflects. It is not in the treasures we’re able to collect. It is not in the fame we achieve. Our hope lies only in the God of our salvation.

“This Psalm instructs and consoles. It teaches that earthly advantages are not reliable for permanent happiness, and that, however prosperous worldly men may be for a time, their ultimate destiny is ruin, while the pious are safe in God’s care.”

A. R. Fausset

Curated happiness

In a world filled with social media posts portraying money and happiness, it can be a struggle to remember that those portrayals are often curated. That woman smiling in her designer clothes at a bougie, invite-only event may seem happy and carefree, but is she?

Sisters, let’s not get trapped in the comparison game, wasting day after day pining for more money and crying out to wealth for salvation.

Our hope and our salvation can only come from the one who created all things and reigns above all creation, God.

  1. Amen! So, So true! This world isn’t everything either, there will be so much more in eternity! Lots of people die too early, and we have little to no control, it is all in God’s hands. God has a beautiful plan for each of us and true happiness is only found in living in His plan. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  2. I liked what bob goff said, Comparisons are only good when they inspire. Like, Be like Jesus – now that’s a worthwhile comparison!
