Psalm 61 was very personal to the Psalmist. It is a song of faith and hope.
“Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.” Psalm 61:1-3
This Psalm is a reminder that God is greater than us and any effort we can exert to save ourselves. He listens to our prayers, and he is the rock where we can find refuge. On that rock we will not be swept away, no matter how bad the storm gets.
When David wrote this Psalm he was king and Absalom was rebelling. His son didn’t just rebel by being defiant. Absalom was trying to take David’s God-given kingdom. God continuously humbled David, challenged him to grow, and reminded him of his dependence on God and his mercies.
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30
When life is going well, it can be easy to start believing we are great and self-sufficient, but we’re not. We are completely reliant on God and his mercies, even when we fail to see it. We must submit to God and trust his guidance and his goodness. It’s hard. Believe me, this control freak gets it, but God is trustworthy and his plans for us are good.
Side note: John 3:30 is the inspiration for the brand HE>i. I love this brand because their logo is a simple, humbling reminder that God is greater than us. It is also a great conversation starter. People are curious to know what it means, and it’s a great way to share with them what it looks like in our own lives that we serve a great God.

I love Psalm 61! “you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name” (v5). Makes me think of the great Christian heritage I have in my parents and grandparents (both sides). So many do not enjoy that, and I do not take it for granted. Great post! Thanks for the reminders. Pinned. Thanks for linking up at InstaEncouragements!
