He is Dependable – Psalm 57

Psalm 57

David was a great king who went from shepherd to God’s chosen ruler. He had much to boast about, but in Psalm 57 we see that despite his rise, David always relied on God. He was dependent on him, for without God he was nothing.

Without God, David would not have gone from poor shepherd to powerful king. He needed God, and throughout the ups and downs of life, David knew God was his source of strength and that he was dependable.

“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!”

Psalm 57:1-3

Dependence is Hard

Depending on others can make us feel uncomfortable and vulnerable, especially when we’ve been hurt by those we’ve depended on. For me personally, I struggle allowing myself to depend on others because I fear being disappointed. This tendency is something I am constantly working on because it impacts my relationship to God. I know in my mind that God is dependable and will not disappoint me, but I still struggle sometimes with letting go of my (perceived) control because, if I’m honest, I’m scared. That mind knowledge is sometimes hard to transform into heart knowledge, but I’m working on it.

If, like me, you find yourself struggling to let go of control and give it all to God, I pray that the fact that he his dependable becomes inscribed on your heart. He will not disappoint you. He will not hurt you. He is good, and he is for you.
