Going Through the Motions – Psalm 50

In Psalm 50 we are reminded that our relationship with God must be about more than simply going through the motions. God wants and deserves our thankfulness and praise.

“Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

Psalm 50:14-15

Going through the motions of following the rules, attending church, and volunteering at Sunday school are not bad in themselves. However, they are not the point. The point is that God is our all powerful, all knowing, merciful, faithful, and holy creator. Without him we would not exist. Not only did he speak us into being, but he also created a path for our redemption after we chose to sin against him.

Let that sink in.

  1. Without God we would cease to exist.
  2. Without his mercy we would have no path towards redemption and would be forever separated from him and his love.

Don’t these truths deserve more than mere motions?

They deserve our wholehearted and constant praise. We have so much to thank God for on a daily basis.

If you’re reading this then that means God allowed your heart to keep beating. He is also providing the oxygen you need to keep breathing. He has provided the roof over you head, the food on your table, and all the blessings you receive.

“The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!”

Psalm 50:23
