God’s Goodness and Faithfulness – Psalm 36

I love the image David paints in Psalm 36 of God’s goodness and faithfulness.

“Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O Lord.”

God’s steadfast love extends to the heavens.

This means God’s love is so great that we cannot measure it. His love will never run short. No matter what he will always have an excess of love to give us. We can never need his love more than he can give.

His faithfulness reaches the clouds.

Stop right now, go outside, and look up at the sky. See how far away the clouds are? Do they seem unreachable? Well, God’s faithfulness can reach them. Unlike people in our lives, God will never abandon us. He is always faithful. Take heart in that truth.

His goodness is like a mighty mountain.

It is unshakeable and unmoveable. Nothing else can compare to it, his goodness overshadows all others. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good.

His judgements are as deep as the greatest depths of the ocean.

Unlike us and our judgements, God’s are never shallow. He knows all and sees all so his judgements are perfect.

He saves all creation, both man and beast.

Because of God’s steadfast love, faithfulness, goodness, and perfect judgements, he is gracious and cares for all creation. He provides food, water, light, and oxygen so that all creation can flourish. And for man he provided the gift of redemption through Jesus so that we can be made new and spend eternity in relationship with him.

Wow. God is good.
