“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” – Corrie Ten Boom
A beautiful quote, but if I’m honest this can be hard to grasp. Although my mind knows it, my heart and emotions can easily say otherwise. So I ask you…
Do You Trust God?
That one question can really have four answers “Yes”, “No”, “Kinda” or “I don’t know”.
So, what would your answer be?
(and please know if it’s anything other than yes, it’s OK)
If you are struggling with trusting Him, keep working through the doubt. Be AUTHENTIC with Him and honest with yourself about it. Instead of operating off the surface (Of course I trust God) or trying to bury that struggle, take the time to process through and come to the real answer.
God is not surprised by your emotions, your answer or your struggles. He wants to walk through it with you.
Yes we have thoughts and emotions, but those are not the same as God’s Word. He did not make us robots or emotionless beings. He created emotions! But those thoughts, emotions and the enemies attacks are not what we lean on. We need to lean on the Truth of God’s word and His promises.
Friend, there is beauty and blessing that He has for you when you work through those very real human emotions of fear and doubt. Why? Because He knows that some of them are just human and some of them are the devil trying to distract, deter and destroy. Either way, He wants to use it to help you grow stronger in Him.
Here are a few tips to help you dig into your answer:
Don’t Do This Alone!
Call a trusted friend, mentor, or coach. But not just anybody. Let it be someone who you know walks with God. Someone who loves God and whose words are wise and life-giving. When I was going through this recently, it took some wise questions that my friend asked me and some back-and-forth and mentoring and coaching to get to my real answer.
And as we look to Trust in the Lord with all our hearts, it’s important to pay attention to the rest of this verse and Do NOT try to lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)
Read God’s Word!
His Word reminds us of His promises that He loves us and that He is in control. The understanding HE gives – that God has your life in His hands – can help you have peace. I have put together a list of verses on TRUST to help you, you can ask for a copy of it HERE.
Surround yourselves with others who are seeking to trust God.
This is the beautiful thing about mentorship and community. Find a community intentionally seeking out connection with each other and surround yourself with people who are trusting God and live to encourage. Join a community where you can be authentically you and but will also challenge you to grow more like JESUS.
Spend time remembering God’s goodness and faithfulness.
Spend some time journaling or even try going through the alphabet, and give a descriptive word for God for each letter while praising Him. Read scripture, and highlight, circle or underline the words that describe God. Being in constant communication with God is a beautiful way to acknowledge His faithfulness.
Practice trusting Him
When we exercise this muscle of trusting in God and having peace in God in all situations we CAN face bad news. It’s going to be easier down the line to say yes and also to identify your feelings when you say no. When we practice doing this over and over again and our response becomes more confidently YES! You CAN say “I have put my full confidence in You”.
Blessings,
